Life on Nest 1A

It is less than a week since coverage of Nest 1A began thanks to the Forestry Commission Radio and Electronics Branch. We have discovered much in that time.

The family of four chicks are keeping YA and Mrs YA quite busy with feeds lasting between 20 and 50 minutes.

But there are long intervals where nothing much happens except a lot of sleeping!

N1A 16.33 siesta for allYA is a petite male but he can bring in some large catches. Although this looks bigger than it was because it is near the nestcam.

Here is a short video of the chicks at mealtime.

Usually two or three chicks eat at the same time. There is seldom any snatching or bullying during a feed – in the video you could see them waiting patiently when Mrs YA had a tough morsel to tear off the fish. There is some bullying occasionally outside meal times but no more than on the ‘average’ Kielder nest.

Mrs YA finds time to bathe and she comes back to the nest to preen.

Bathing will cool her nicely in the mini-heatwave Kielder has experienced over the last 5 days. The chicks haven’t got that option but Mrs YA does her best to provide shade.

YA spends much of hs time on the perch or the nestcam. When on the perch he looks even smaller than he is, a mini-YA!

The weather is expected to be cooler with some showers over the next few days. That shouldn’t be a problem for the Nest 1A offspring – chick 1 reaches the 3 week milestone on Thursday.

Wow, thanks for these beautiful film clips. It’s great to see all the chicks looking so healthy. Especially nice being able to watch the nest of four. Something I suspect most of us have not had the privilege to see before now. :)

It is a rare opportunity to have insight into a nest with four chicks. A lot of the time nothing happens! But we aim to show how the foursome develop.

Gosh …… they all look so good ……. very evenly matched ……… YA and MrsYA are doing a fabulous job! Will these be ringed? Thanks for the update Joanna :-)

All the Kielder chicks will be ringed. YA and Mrs YA are handling the situation faultlessly as far as the 12 hr daily coverage shows
