It isn’t known how big a gap there was between the laying of eggs 2 and 3 on Nest 3 but a third hatch by yesterday afternoon was expected. The egg was still intact when there were reasonable views of it. This wasn’t one of those moments!
Here is a video of the chicks feeding on 27 May and some views of egg 3 yesterday.
During yesterday morning the male was on and off with a fish. The last couple of times the female wasn’t interested in feeding herself or the chicks and on the last visit she lost any chance of a final morsel from that trout.
The hatching window is open on Nest 2 now. Yesterday until late afternoon the only time 37 incubated was after he had brought a fish for EB.
When EB returned about 75 minutes after taking lunch away she had the remnants of the fish with her.
Unusually it stayed on the nest with her. Perhaps she was hearing a chick ‘pipping’ yesterday and felt she was in for the long haul!
In Spain UV is still in Aragon doing some gentle exploring. This graphic by Paul shows why he may not have set off north when he flew west to Portugal then back to eastern Spain.
Most of the days during his travels saw extensive clouds to the north of him. He does seem to like Spain, though, so the UK may not be his destination this year. That comment should prompt an onward move!
