Second chick hatches at Nest 3

The second chick on Nest 3 hatched just minutes after a ‘dead’ laptop battery forced evacuation of the download point yesterday! Thank goodness for the recordings retrieved today.

Here is a video of the chick freeing itself from the half shell as the female nudges it, sibling and egg 3 around the nest.

Whilst the chick was getting to grips with planet Earth the male landed with a part fish. The female stayed sitting and he flew off with it.

It rained later but perhaps the chick had some food before then. If not the nutrients from the egg sac sustain hatchlings for many hours.

This morning the temperature was 9.5°C at ‘lake level’ and felt cooler on the fells. The brisk NE wind didn’t help. The female stayed tight on the chicks/egg 3 during the recorded clips. This was the best view.

The weather should improve from tomorrow.
