Last night on Nest 2

The previous post ended with a teaser about Blue 39/Bracken returning to Nest 2. Here’s the story.

EB had been alone on the nest. 37 hadn’t been seen since early morning. Suddenly EB became alert and adopted the classic ‘fish delivery imminent’ stance. But it wasn’t 37 who arrived.

As he landed White EB moved to take the fish, but Blue 39/Bracken had second thoughts and took off with it. In less than a minute he was back and handed over the freshwater fish. White EB left with her meal but six minutes later she was back, both birds mantled and guess who landed with a trout!

White EB just got on with her meal as the males mantled.

Blue 39/Bracken held his ground and surprisingly  – for an experienced breeding male – 37 left first. But he soon returned and despite a final swoop Blue 39/Bracken flew away. Here is a video of his departure.

There’ll be more video of the event in a vimeo movie tomorrow. This morning 37 was the male in attendance at Nest 2. We hope we see more of plucky Blue 39/Bracken during the season!
