Nest 2 with Blue 39’s arrival and the Calvert Trust motorboat trips – both of which had several osprey sightings including a large fish caught in Leaplish Bay – were outstanding events and Family Osprey Day was a great success overall, more on that later in the week.
This post looks more at what is happening on Nest 2, including that special arrival!
Yesterday morning 37 brought a whole trout for White EB, which she took away to eat elsewhere. She returned with half a fish and allowed 37 to take it.
He flew off to eat. But within five minutes she summoned 37 and he returned, she took the fish and finished it whilst he stayed on the nest.
37 attempted to mate but was unsuccessful. Several times. Later in the afternoon this was replicated when he brought in a freshwater fish – maybe White EB prefers them – but the end result was the same.
Today, although both were on the nest when streaming began they left within 5 minutes. No action until that very special ring Blue 39 was seen! Here is a video of 37 trying to mate after providing White EB with almost all of two fish, plus some of Blue 39’s behaviour on the nest. Click to view, apologies for jerky video.Blue 39 -who was named Bracken in a competion in 2011 – seemed quite relaxed when on Nest 2. Here is a link to the video of him being ringed. This is a very special day for Sally, founder of the website, who was there.
The drama wasn’t over, just before the nestcam stream shut down Blue 39 was back… more tomorrow on what happened next!
