On Nest 2 37 and EB are still together with no sign of Mrs 37 although there was an unseen intruder’s shadow over the nest yesterday as White EB laid in the nest cup and called. Another unseen bird annoyed Mrs YA too this morning.
YA landed and after a few minutes they were relaxed enough to mate.
Back to the Nest 2 slow burner of a courtship! White EB is making herself at home on the nest. She spends a lot of time preening and also scrapes the nest cup regularly.
37 has brought bark and sticks and also scraped, but he perhaps needs to be quicker to provide food. White EB watched him displaying yesterday afternoon and when he landed she seemed to expect a fish, but 37 was empty taloned.
37 is eager to mate but is still being rejected most of the time – of sixteen attempts yesterday only two might have been successful.
This morning White EB’s crop suggested she hadn’t eaten recently. 37 brought several pieces of bark to the nest and sought a reward only to be shrugged off. After half an hour he disappeared and 45 minutes later returned with a whole trout.
White EB took the fish and took a nibble on the edge before flying off with her meal.
Tomorrow between 11 and 3 Family Osprey Day is running at Kielder Castle with a range of activities including demonstrations of ringing garden birds. The Calvert Trust has two motorboat sailings, details in the link above. Should be a good day!
