Nest 1 and Nest 2 females are still around

There are more reports each day of breeding females having left their nests on migration. At Kielder it is possible the Nest 3 female has departed although one of the family was very quick (and sneaky!) in returning to the nest area if in fact only three were present during checks on Sunday.

The Nest 1 and 2 females were still visiting their nests today, Mrs 37 more frequently than Mrs YA. Yesterday if you blinked you would have missed Mrs YA during one fish collection!

Mrs 37 has been defending her nest at times, mantling, looking up at and sometimes chasing after an unseen intruder. Although today she mantled after missing out when 37 brought a fish to the nest, unusual behaviour for her.

Mrs YA didn’t leave until 30 August last year, just one day prior to the first juvenile – VV -starting her migration. Today she was still collecting partly eaten fish when one of her offspring had moved away, sated for the time being.
