More on Nest 3

The Friday update about Nest 3 mentioned a temperature of 24.5°C down by the water. Today it was 10°C in the same place at the same time. No wonder that brooding the chicks was the main action on Nests 1 and 2 today.

But back to Nest 3. The chicks certainly fed well between Monday and Friday when the footage for the period was downloaded. This image from 11 June shows Chick 1 with a bulging crop after one session.

The chicks’ down changed over the period.

The image above was during a feed from an initially thrashing fish when the male delivered it. A video shows it sweeping across the chicks as the female tried to gain control.11540931_628159130653568_1815994377_o

The male is nearly always present for at least part of a meal and will feed the chicks himself. Friday afternoon was one such occasion although the female had to nag a bit before he obliged. Despite being a less experienced parent than 37 or YA he is less tentative when offering morsels to the chicks than those two.
