Update on Chick 3, Nest 2

The weather was much better today at Kielder with sun and lighter winds. 37 brought two good size fish to the nest and Chicks 1 and 2 fed four times by late afternoon.

Chick 3 was not seen to eat anything although on a couple of feeds Mrs 37 obscured the view. Generally it barely moved and never begged when visible. This is the end of a feed at 09.30; Chick 3 was in this position throughout.

During a later feed 37 looked down at the chick.

He hopped from the edge to take a closer look but the chick didn’t respond.

After feeding Chicks 1 and 2 at 14.32 Mrs 37 moved near Chick 3 with the fish.

But Chick 3 didn’t lift its head and she left the fish and went back to brood the trio. She was brooding the chicks (and the non-viable egg) late in the afternoon.

Such bad news. Is this because it was probably the fourth egg and may have started life weak or did it get weaker having hatched in poor weather.

A mixture of both, probably, Keith. The chick was small, not just in comparison to the siblings, when it hatched. It did eat on Friday but yesterday in the poor weather it started to struggle. The older chicks are eating for longer so Chick 3 was in the very strong winds for minutes on several occasions.

I’m so sorry to read this, I had hoped things would improve today.
