The weather was wet on Friday at Kielder and YA spent most of the day in spruce trees near the nest or atop the nestcam pole.
When the nestcam stream started he was on the nest with part of a fish. Later he took it off to a tree.
He managed a bit more ‘nestoration’ although he still has trouble deciding where the ‘best’ spot is to place a stick. It usually goes from one side to the other and back again.
When on the nest edge he preened for about 20 minutes. This is important for maintaining his feathers in good condition. Or maybe he was making himself look good for the female’s return!
A short video of YA’s return yesterday can be seen here.
There was no sign of other Nest 1 or Nest 2 ospreys. This year the migration window has been unfavourable for much of the time. UK tracked ospreys have sat out bad weather in Spain and France. Yesterday there was a bit of an influx including YA’s brother Black 80 who breeds at Threave Castle in Dumfries and Galloway. One osprey who is usually back by late March is their father, 11(98), the Glaslyn male. We hope he returns very soon, the Glaslyn female and many people are waiting for him.
