Breakfast in bed!

There was early feeding on both nests today. On Nest 2 it looked a bit like a case of breakfast in bed!

As Mrs 37 pulled the trout towards her it knocked some moss over the chicks, not a deliberate covering up. But none of the chicks or Mrs 37 tried to get rid of it for most of the meal.

It was warm and sunny but a little breezy at Kielder, so much better than ‘midge heaven’ Sunday. Mrs YA has been a revelation in her habits this year, from incubating well to feeding the chicks before herself.  But she still doesn’t have the hang of sheltering them when it is hot and sunny. This was her best effort.

But later she stood to the side and all three crawled out of the nest cup in search of shade. One ventured a bit too close to the edge for comfort; Mrs YA did shepherd it back to the nest cup the second time. It was out of sight of the nestcam for a few moments. There’ll probably be more times like that, unfortunately.

Both males fed the chicks a few mouthfuls.

The chicks’ appearance changes so rapidly at the moment. It is wonderful to see them developing.
