A short blog to give a link to a new video of Nest 1 late on Friday. The chicks look so different just 36 hours later!
On Saturday evening there was an intruder alert on Nest 1. You can see the change in the chicks since Friday.
But look at them today in a late morning feed! The older two are noticeably greyer.
Also of interest, in the ‘intruder’ incident the chicks are looking up rather than lying prone in the nest. Thanatosis, the strategy of ‘playing dead’ is adopted by most animals when faced by a threat and the adult ospreys’ alarm call should indicate to chicks to get down and do just that. Chicks’ backs look like earth with a twig, effective camouflage. But the threesome were far too interested in events to lie down, even though YA seemed to be alarm calling. The incident lasted less than a minute so maybe not too serious – although YA looks fairly annoyed!
