Blue 35 in South Cumbria

Regular readers of this blog will know that a Nest 1 born female, Blue 35, who hatched in 2010, is in South Cumbria nesting on a Cumbria Wildlife Trust CWT) reserve, Foulshaw Moss, with a male from Bassenthwaite. The CWT have kindly shared some shots from their camera for us to use on this blog. Many thanks to them; it is wonderful to have these shots of the first known Kielder born osprey to breed.

The first pre-dates egg laying and was taken soon after her arrival on about 6 April. Good of her to show off the ring so well!

The second image is from 5 May when the pair are almost certainly incubating; any eggs are too deep in the nest to be seen. In the shot, Blue 35 is having a preen whilst the male does the hard work, although he is snoozing at the same time!

Wonderful news Joanna. Those genes from Orange 11 certainly have played a significant part in osprey distribution. So pleased for you all :)

Sandra, in 2010 when Blue 35 hatched neither of the Glaslyn sons were breeding at Kielder. Her parents were unringed so almost certainly Scottish. YA didn’t arrive until 2012 on Nest 1, Blue 35’s nest. Maybe Orange 11 is related to one of her parents, but we’ll never know that! I’ll edit the post so her year of birth is clear. The Rutland Water style of ring/(year) has advantages!
