FLASH!!! Nest 1 Female back, HURRAY.

At 11.23 the Nest 1 female landed on Nest 1. She had a shout, moved a stick and sauntered around reminding herself of the view. Or looking for White YA more likely.

She looks well although in need of a fish judging by her crop. After 20 minutes of being admired by nestcam viewers she flew off.

More tonight. EDIT: This osprey is not the 2013 female, who returned on 8 April.

Great news – good luck for the season

  2. joannadailey says:

Thanks, Marion, we’re thrilled, hurry up our other ospreys now!

  3. Tiger says:

Brilliant news. Now where is that white YA?

  4. Great news. Hope that crop of hers is now stuffed full of Keilder Water fish :)

  5. Hooray. Now for her mate to arrive… I love that word nestorising!

  6. joannadailey says:

You can uncross a couple of fingers now, ViV, but not all of them until all our ospreys are back safely!

    • Vivien Finn says:

Great news Joanna, will still keep fingers crossed until all of the Osprey return safely.
Delighted YA’s female has arrived,a fish supper a good rest and she will be looking really good in the morning. :)

  7. Eizabeth says:

Fantastic news! But how do you know its the same female as last year – what are her particular identifying features?

    • joannadailey says:

Fantastic indeed, Elizabeth, although now I’m worrying about the other Kielder ospreys! Even though this is the earliest day we’ve had returners reported.
She is a very distinctive osprey with a darker forehead than most and a very speckled chest which goes deeper up and down her chest compared to most females. It was clearly her within 10 seconds of seeing half of the body. If there had been any doubt her proprietorial behaviour towards the nest – moving sticks and moss – showed she was home!

  8. Keith Rogers says:

Great Captures Joanna – Well as one resident lands on the nest I am over 3500 miles away looking for another English Osprey. Maybe as well as looking for YA she may get a visit from 37.
Then maybe when YA does return he may have a pageant to decide which female he may want.
Well it was so exciting last year.

  9. greg Sanders says:

Brilliant news Joanna- lets hope the rest get back soon!

  10. Steven Edgar says:

Excellent news. Where can I view the webcams?

  11. joannadailey says:

Unfortunately, Steven, technical issues such as lack of cable connection, unstable microwave links and slow rural broadband mean webcams are a dream at the moment. The nestcams are available at Kielder Castle Cafe from 10.00 to 17.00 (Cafe open from 9.30) every day.
