Lots of preening

The weather at Kielder was distinctly damp in the morning but there was sunshine in the afternoon and a mugginess in the air. In the morning Blue 6H spent time alone on the nest and concentrated on preening. The sheaths on the tail feathers have quite a way to go yet before the feathers will be fully released.

In the afternoon Mrs YA joined her chick. Both ospreys did a lot of shouting interspersed with preening. Mrs YA moved some sticks, newly delivered, around the nest. At about 15.40 YA appeared with a fish. Mrs YA strode purposefully towards it, the nestcam stream went off…! After about 20 seconds without coverage the returning images showed Blue 6H tucking in. Mrs YA was offering pretty small morsels on the whole – perhaps she was trying to save a big portion for herself! It is possible the weather prevented a morning catch, or maybe all the preening had made the ospreys especially hungry!

Unfortunately the link from a key relay point to Kielder Castle is down; the Boat Inn at Leaplish still has coverage of the Nest 1 nestcam.

A video from today is here. Some images are below.
