Milestones

No Nest 2 stream again at Kielder on Saturday but the chick on Nest 1 did its best to provide interest. It repeatedly tried to stand and walk on its feet rather than haunches. Mostly it tipped forward in an ungainly fashion but some of the time it succeeded. So one milestone. And another was that it fed itself!

It had eaten well early in the day and YA had gone off with the leftovers at about 09.40. Some of the morning Mrs YA was on the nest, at other times not. At 12.15 she came down from a tree and she and the chick were shouting. In flew YA with fish, which he placed on the moss. No-one made a move, then the chick decided it would take control and went over to pull at the trout. The parents watched on as it struggled initially, but eventually managed to tear off quite a few reasonable morsels. Mrs YA took over feeding duty after a while. A video of the event will be uploaded later. For now, here are a couple of images from a busy morning for the chick!
