Wet afternoon on the nests

After the excitement of finding two chicks on Nest 1 now there is coverage again (albeit tinged with sorrow for one who hasn’t made it) the rain on Thursday afternoon made for a ‘hunkering down’ period with little to see.

On Nest 2 the chicks had fed shortly before the rain. Mrs 37 then did her best to shelter the rather large youngsters. She had the rain coming from her rear so her upper body provided some cover for the oozing out bits of chick! 37 decided to give her some moral support at about 1330 and brought his fish in to eat beside her. Hope she was impressed!

On Nest 1, Mrs YA was low over the two chicks. They are much more vulnerable – they are still far from waterproof and cannot regulate their temperature. Tomorrow sounds wet again but then the forecast suggests some improvement.

The camera stream viewable at the Boat Inn at Leaplish should now be Nest 1’s nestcam unless technical difficulties occur. All three cameras are screened at Kielder Castle Cafe.

There is a new video of the tiny Nest 1 chicks here.
