Could Monday get more exciting after the relatively speedy hatch of a strong youngster on Nest 2? Well, YES! In the last hour before the nestcam stream shut down it was evident the second hatch was under way!
Since shortly before 1500 Mrs 37 had been sitting on the remaining eggs and the newborn chick with just occasional shuffles, and a few words with 37 who came to check on his family several times. Then, about 1615, she started to get more fidgety. She stood up and shuffled the eggs. The larger half of egg one was still under her so it seemed she might be going to get rid of it, but she was more interested in another egg. And when she turned it the reason was obvious – quite a large hole! So by the time the cameras come on tomorrow, chick 1 should be joined by a sibling. This is fast given the eggs were laid two days apart but a ‘same day hatch’ has happened elsewhere this year at Rutland Water’s Manton Bay nest.
