The first of this year’s osprey chicks in Kielder Water & Forest Park was born this afternoon on Nest 1. Forestry Commission staff at Kielder Castle spied the little one just after 3pm after mum shuffled around to a reveal the seemingly healthy chick; it was able to hold itself up, which means it was born an hour of two earlier. This is the fourth year of successful hatching for this nest, though we are all mindful of the poor weather last year that meant that the pair only got one chick to fledging.
Nest 2 is about two weeks behind, but all seems well here too. The female has been turning eggs and male has been paying regular calls.
